EVENT WHITE Matthew Macfadyen BLACK Des Cann RESULT W+4.5 BOARDSIZE 19 DATE 2000-08-19 PLACE Alexandra Palace, London KOMI 5.5 TIMELIMIT 3 hours COM Commentary by Seong-June Kim 6-dan and Charles Matthews 3-dan. Black Rank: 4d Write Rank: 6d Round: 1 ENDCOM B 1 Q16 W 2 E17 B 3 Q3 W 4 C4 B 5 Q9 COM The first question. Black builds the Chinese-style formation down the right-hand side. However White 4 anticipated that, and made the lower left corner a particularly important area. So it would be usual for Black to play there now; in which case the onus is on White to co-ordinate his forces on the left. ENDCOM W 6 F3 COM Kim prefers the enclosure to be one point to the left; but this is Macfadyen's style. ENDCOM B 7 D15 COM This approach is normal play, but weak on territory. ENDCOM W 8 C16 B 9 C15 W 10 B16 COM This play creates an open skirt for Black's formation on the left. From now on the play one below 10 becomes very important for both. ENDCOM B 11 C11 W 12 N4 MARK a@C9 COM 12 is in an important area when Black plays Chinese-style, but the balance of 6 and 14 is a little strange (see comment on 6). So probably White should play at (a) immediately. ENDCOM B 13 Q5 W 14 K4 B 15 F16 W 16 E16 B 17 E15 W 18 G18 B 19 H17 COM 19 makes 20 even larger. ENDCOM W 20 C9 B 21 H18 COM Now seems to be the time for Black to make the thick move blocking off the left side. This helps to cover against White cutting, and also has implications when Black invades the lower left. ENDCOM W 22 G17 COM 22 to 25 are a bad exchange for White. White's reply to Black 21 would be better on the left side. ENDCOM B 23 G16 W 24 H16 B 25 K17 W 26 H15 B 27 G14 W 28 H14 B 29 H13 COM Could run back once, and then play double hane. ENDCOM W 30 J13 B 31 G13 W 32 K14 MARK a@L16 COM White has several interesting options here. One of them is to press at (a). ENDCOM B 33 M16 COM The 32/33 exchange turns out OK for Black, since White's central group is a little heavy. ENDCOM W 34 J10 B 35 L13 W 36 K12 B 37 G10 COM 35 and 37 are inconsistent. After 35 Black should play to safeguard the top right corner, though White will then prosper in the lower left. If Black wants to play 37, 35 first cuts out some options when White answers at 36. ENDCOM W 38 F9 B 39 G9 W 40 G8 B 41 H8 W 42 F8 COM White could push up once, Black extends, then double hane. ENDCOM B 43 J9 W 44 H7 B 45 L10 W 46 M15 B 47 N16 W 48 M13 B 49 L12 W 50 N15 COM Up to 50 it seems to be anybody's game. ENDCOM B 93 L9 W 94 H11 B 95 B15 COM As Black started the endgame with 95 and 97, he seemed to have a clear lead of at least ten points. ENDCOM W 96 B18 B 97 N2 W 98 R3 COM Macfadyen agrees, White 98 is a slightly unreasonable play trying to stir things up. ENDCOM B 99 R4 W 100 Q2 B 101 P3 W 102 S3 B 103 P2 W 104 R1 COM White makes a small living group in the corner with 102 and 104. This means that White can walk into the upper left area while forcing Black to connect with 165, 167 etc. ENDCOM W 160 N8 B 161 M9 W 162 N7 B 163 O4 W 164 D10 B 165 E11 W 166 D11 B 167 E12 W 168 D12 B 169 C13 W 170 D13 B 171 E13 W 172 E10 B 173 F11 W 174 C12 B 175 B12 W 176 C14 B 177 B13 W 178 D14 B 179 B14 W 180 G15 B 181 F15 W 182 A10 COM When White gets to play at 182 the game is decided.
