BGA Council and Officials

As described in the constitution, the administrative body of the British Go Association is the BGA Council. At the AGM, the three Officers of the BGA, the Honorary President, Honorary Secretary and Honorary Treasurer, are elected and become ex officio Council members. Five other Council members are also elected and further members may be co-opted by Council. In addition the AGM appoints an Auditor and the BGA can appoint Life Members and Vice-Presidents.

In addition, Council creates a number of committees and appoints a chairman and members to each with further members possibly being appointed by the committees themselves. Each committee has Terms of Reference.

All members of committees have a job title and a job definition and are referred to as BGA officials. Examples are the Journal Editor (on the Journal and Newsletter Committee) and the Membership Secretary (on the Clubs and Membership Committee). The structure of the committees was changed by Council in August 2006. Before the change, most officials were constitutionally chairmen of one-person committees. After the change, the number of committees was considerably reduced and all committees have multiple members. The chairman of a committee was given the responsibility to co-ordinate the activities of his or her officials and to facilitate their working as team.

The smooth running of the British Go Association depends on the freely given time of all those listed here, and others. Council would like to thank them all. Volunteers to join them are always welcome - please consult the list of vacancies and consider volunteering for some of the jobs described.
