Can you help the BGA? List of Vacancies

Current as of 8th March 2010.

The BGA is dependent on volunteers to continue member services as well as undertake more ambitious activities. We have a number of vacant posts at present and we would like to hear from any member willing to assist with the development of Go in the UK.

To see more about each post see the Job Description pages.

If you are interested in any of these vacancies, please contact the Committee Chair of the committee indicated.

If you are interested in helping the BGA, you need not feel limited by these vacancies - please contact Jon Diamond (BGA President) if you would like to assist with the development of Go in the UK in any way.

Book Seller’s Committee

Book Seller

Gerry Mills has indicated that he will be resigning after the last tournament in November, after a period of 16 years and at the age of 80. We appreciate that it will be difficult to replace him, but we encourage people who would like to do all or part of what he does to contact Simon Mader. The new job will be constructed around what the volunteer or volunteers are prepared to undertake.

Journal Backnumbers

We need someone to hold back number of the BGJ. We are no longer planning to sell back numbers, apart from very recent issues, as they’re all available on the website (or will be), so it’s a less onerous job and will mainly involve taking some to tournaments, for members to acquire them free of charge.

Clubs and Membership

Recruitment and Retention

Suggests ways of and encourages recruitment to the BGA and retention of existing members.

Regional Reps

There are some vacancies for Regional Reps and also some Regional Reps who only hold these positions reluctantly.

External Relations

Exhibitions

Suggests and encourages publicity and teaching stands at various events. We’d like someone to be be responsible for organising participation in teaching and other events.

Player Development

Teaching in Clubs and Teaching Events Officials

These are two new positions designed to develop the BGA’s services in the area of go teaching. It might suit the same person to take on both roles.

With teaching in clubs, the idea is not (necessarily) for the Official to actually do any teaching but to suggest initiatives that would improve the way that clubs approach this. Currently, clubs do a considerable amount of informal mentoring and player development - but maybe it could be improved?

How about setting up a roving teaching class that would offer its services - maybe for a fee? - to clubs up and down the country?

The difference with Teaching Events is that these events would be advertised generally rather than being intended for local club members. Currently, for example, Steve Bailey from the West Surrey Club runs an excellent West Surrey Teach-in. Maybe we should be encouraging more clubs to do similar; maybe the BGA should organise its own events? Again, maybe we should consider making a charge?

How about teaching sessions at tournaments? We’ve already started to do that with the Shodan Challenge events.

Publications

Contributors, Typesetters and Proof Readers

Producing the British Go Journal is a large task, and relies on the support of a number of people. As well as contributors, help is required with typesetting and proof readers. Full details can be found at the BGJ submission guidelines.

Youth

Regional Youth Reps

There are some vacancies for Regional Youth Reps and also some Regional Youth Reps who only hold these positions reluctantly.
