Current as of 7th December 2011
The BGA is dependent on volunteers to continue member services as well as undertake more ambitious activities. We have a number of vacant posts and we would like to hear from any member willing to assist with the development of Go in the UK.
Our most pressing requirement is for people to help with a number of activities in our Youth Development area, helping Paul Smith. Some of these are smallish activities and can be done from your own home, so if you can spend some time please contact Paul to discuss what he needs and how he can fit in with the time and sort of thing you can offer to do.
To see more about each post see the Job Description pages. If you are interested in any of these vacancies, please contact the Committee Chair of the committee indicated. If you are interested in helping the BGA in other ways please contact the President.
Suggests ways of and encourages club development, possibly using the Regional Representatives.
Suggests ways of and encourages recruitment to the BGA and retention of existing members.
There are some vacancies for Regional Reps and also some Regional Reps who only hold these positions reluctantly.
Suggests and encourages publicity and teaching stands at various events. We'd like someone to be be responsible for organising participation in teaching and other events.
Manage and post on the BGA's behalf on Facebook.
These are two new positions designed to develop the BGA's services in the area of Go teaching. It might suit the same person to take on both roles.
With teaching in clubs, the idea is not (necessarily) for the Official to actually do any teaching but to suggest initiatives that would improve the way that clubs approach this. Currently, clubs do a considerable amount of informal mentoring and player development - but maybe it could be improved?
How about setting up a roving teaching class that would offer its services - maybe for a fee? - to clubs up and down the country?
The difference with Teaching Events is that these events would be advertised generally rather than being intended for local club members. Currently, for example, Steve Bailey from the West Surrey Club runs an excellent West Surrey Teach-in. Maybe we should be encouraging more clubs to do similar; maybe the BGA should organise its own events? Again, maybe we should consider making a charge?
How about teaching sessions at tournaments? We've already started to do that with the Shodan Challenge events.
Producing the British Go Journal is a large task, and relies on the support of a number of people. As well as contributors, help is required with typesetting and proof readers. Full details can be found at the BGJ submission guidelines.
The Championships Organiser is responsible for co-ordinating the organisation of the various UK titles: the British Go Championship and the Youth and Pair Go events. The duties are detailed in the Rules for the British Championships.
Co-ordinates between the Central London Go Club and the BGA in regard to the running of the London Open Tournament.
Suggests and encourages various clubs to run the British Go Congress and co-ordinates their plans within the BGA.
There are always a number of specific activities that need your help in this Committee. Most of them don't need you to travel to Schools etc. So please contact the Youth Committee Chairman if you would like to help in any way.
There are some vacancies for Regional Youth Reps and also some Regional Youth Reps who only hold these positions reluctantly.
