BGA Honorary Positions

Life Member

This is an honorary title given without obligation to BGA members who have been deemed worthy of recognition for services rendered to the BGA. Life Members are exempt from paying membership fees.

Vice-President

This is an honorary title given without obligation to BGA members who have been deemed worthy of recognition for services rendered to the BGA.

Council

The duties of the three officers (President, Treasurer and Secretary) are defined in the constitution of the BGA.

President

The Honorary President takes the chair at any meeting, General or Council, and represents the BGA at formal events and in the BGA’s relations with other organisations.

Treasurer

The Honorary Treasurer controls the finances of the BGA. He should prepare for approval by members at the AGM annual accounts and a report. He should also ensure that all bills and affiliations are promptly paid, and that Council committees are properly funded and submit regular and frequent reports.

Secretary

The Honorary Secretary maintains the day-to-day communications of the Council and keeps minutes of all meetings, General and Council. Any BGA member may request to receive copies of BGA minutes.

Council Member

The Honorary President, Honorary Secretary and Honorary Treasurer are ex officio Council Members. Additionally, up to 5 non-officer council members are elected at the AGM, and up to 3 others may be co-opted by Council to cover resignations or where an individual has something particular to contribute.

There are normally four ordinary meetings a year in various locations, plus the AGM and any EGMs, at which the business of the BGA is discussed and planned. Council meetings usually last about three hours and are often followed by something sociable like a meal or some go playing.

Council members usually have actions arising from the meeting that need to be done before the next meeting. There are also email discussions and formal email Council votes between meetings. The Council members (and officers) also act as the various committee chairmen.

The Auditor

As specified in the constitution of the BGA, the Auditor shall examine the accounts produced by the Treasurer and will produce a report recommending acceptance or rejection on behalf of the members. He or she must not be a member of Council.

BGA Committees

Committee Chairman

The Chairman of a committee has the responsibilty to co-ordinate the Officials on his or her committee and ensure that they work as a team as far as is appropriate. He or she also reports to Council on the activities of the whole committee. The Chairman may or may not also have a role as an Official on the committee, but he or she must also be a member of Council.

The President acts as Chairman of any committee for which the chair is vacant.
