UK Tournament Diary

After much delay we have finally found some dates when we have (a) two players, (b) a venue and (c) at least one relayer/referee for the title match of the British Go Championship 2014. Apologies for how long it's taken; on the whole, it might count as a shame that we have fairly busy participants this year ...

Should anyone not know and be curious, said busy participants are the incumbent champion Andrew Kay (aka warfreak2 on KGS right) and challenger Alex Kent (aka saraneth on KGS and far right).

Game one will take place in Milton Keynes (specifically at Tim Hunt's flat - many, many thanks to Tim) on Saturday 27th September.

Letchworth Garden City Rapid Play
Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire
8 November 2014

This is a new style Go tournament, being held on 8th November, which aims to provide you with the chance to play a variety of opponents on even games over the course of one day. The format is designed to be attractive to double digit kyu players and to junior players in particular.

The tournament will be split into a number of sections (using British Go Association grades). The sections will each include six rounds in a Swiss draw system, with all games even and 30 minutes sudden death time limits. (This makes it a Class C tournament for grading purposes).

All ages and abilities are welcome. If this is your first ever tournament, then play in the Novice section (20 kyu and under) unless you have had some success in games against rated players. Juniors are encouraged to play within the junior sections although some exceptions may be made for the strongest juniors with an established grade.

Please enter early if you are intending to play.

In case some of you didn’t notice: due to a booking conflict at the International Students House we’ve had to change the days of the week for the Challengers League from Friday - Monday as in previous years to Saturday 24th May - Tuesday 27th May in 2014. We hope this won’t be too much of an inconvenience to you and would like feedback after the event as to whether we should keep these days of the week or revert to Friday to Monday (subject to room availability obviously).

The British Championship entry fee will remain as it has for the last few years at £25, with something new this year: the entry fee those entitled to BGA concessionary membership will be £10.

Also new this year we are considering offering assistance with travel expenses to those in financial difficulty.

Online League
KGS
1 March 2013 - 21 December 2013

I plan to close the current league season on 21st December at noon, leaving people free to enjoy the Winter Solstice at 17:11.

We've had a good few games in Divisons 2 and 3 although Divison 1 has been a bit thin on the ground.

Unless anyone objects beforehand I shall declare drawn unplayed games in matches which have started. However I would prefer to see them played out so if that means you please can you finish them as soon as possible.

Please can all teams confirm as soon as possible that they will be playing next year. I hope to get the next season under way in March, so everyone please check that they can play. We would be pleased to welcome any new teams that want to join the league, so don't be shy!

I hope everyone has enjoyed the league this year and I look forward to some interesting games in the coming year.

John Collins
