MSO 19x19

MSO GP Go 19x19 - Saturday 25 February 2023

Players must have registered for the MSO Grand Prix and must have entered the tournament .

Games will be played on OGS online-go.com.

You need to use the OGS account that you specified when you entered the tournament. You should make sure that the account has a validated email address in OGS, otherwise you may not be able to use all the OGS chat facilities.

Go to the Mind Sports Olympiad group online-go.com/group/6438 and join the group (if you are not already a member) so your id appears in the list on the right (there will be several pages of ids on the list). We will use the chat box on this group age to communicate during the event.

This is not an "OGS Tournament" so ignore the Join a Tournament at the top.

Between 13:15 and 13:45 UK time (GMT), say "hello" in chat so that we know you are present and you may be asked to give your name so we know who you are. If you don't say hello in the chat by 13:45 you may be left out of the draw for the first round. We will aim to start the first round at 14:00 if possible. We expect that the tournament will finish between 19:00 and 19:30 but it depends on how good people are at starting their games quickly!

The tournament will be 4 rounds McMahon with top players above the bar.

Players are expected to play all 4 rounds. If you cannot play later rounds please so say when your game finishes and you will be removed from the rest of the tournament. Games should be started within 5 minutes of the pairing being announced. Absent players will lose. If a player drops out during a game, they must restart within 5 minutes else they may lose.

The komi, as advertised is 7.5, except in handicap games when it is 0.5.

Pairings will be announced as being on a britgo.org page in the group chat at the start time (hopefully). Use the look up table to find the OGS id of your opponent.

The player taking Black should challenge their opponent on OGS. If you are not able to challenge, message your opponent asking them to do it instead.

Now, in the list of players on the right, find your opponent (if present the dot will be green) and click on them (you might need to look through several pages of players to find them). You can also click on their name in chat or use the user search (top left).

Clicking on the player will give a pop-up box, from which you can select the ‘Challenge’ button.

In the pop-up box select:

Game Name - (not needed or can be set "MSO game 1" and so on)
Private - (leave unticked)

Rules - AGA
Game Speed - Live
Time Control - Fischer
Initial Time - 10 minutes
Time Increment - 10 seconds (default)
Max Time - 10 minutes (default)

Ranked - (leave unticked)
Board Size - 19x19
Handicap - None - except in handicap games set to number of stones from the draw
Komi - Custom (default is 7.5) - except in handicap games set to 0.5
Your Color - Black
Disable Analysis - Tick

The person receiving the challenge will receive a voice notification (if sound is on) and in the top-right corner a notification on screen (bell icon to the left of your name) They should click on this - check the conditions are correct and click the tick to accept. Challenges are also shown on the home page but please try to play the game within the group.

Please play fairly. There should be no use of external aids such as AI software, joseki dictionaries, another player or anything else of the like. We are trusting people to play fairly! The "pause game" function should not be used apart from exceptional circumstances such as disconnection.

The MSO has rules and tie-breaks.

Please note it is Chinese-style area scoring, so no pass stones are given, but you should play all the dame before passing. Suicide is not allowed. Ko is repeated board position.

As it is Fischer time, as long as moves are made within 10 seconds when short on time, players should not lose on time. Remember it takes several seconds to Pass.

Their are three cases when "Undo" could be needed: 1. the server puts the stone one intersection away from where you intended, 2. an accidental click puts a stone in a ridiculous place away from the course of action, 3. you don't like your move. Requesting "Undo" is forbidden in 3. In 1. or 2., if accepted, you must play immediately on the correct intersection. A player does not have to accept an "Undo" request. Do not request "Undo" when the opponent is short of time (less than 5 minutes left).

At the end of the dame filling, both players pass, then check and accept the dead stones and get the result.

Please announce if you won the game in the group chat, in case it is missed.

Any disputes or problems let us know in chat.
Paul Smith (Paul Smith on OGS) and Colin Williams (AgingGuru on OGS)
