The first every EGC in the UK had particpants from 10 nations, and was held at Avery Hill College in South-East London. Mr Hayashida, representing the Japanese Ambassador Mr Shima, opened the event. Also visiting the event were strong players from Asia: Prof. Akiba, observing on behalf of the Nihon Ki-in, Prof. Murai from Germany, and Lee Chang-Sae a Korean student in Berlin. In all there were 62 participants, including 55 active players.
The organisers for the BGA were Ethel and John Barrs, with Bob Hitchens as Tournament Director. As well as Go activities, they organised a tourist visit to the city and a farewell party.
