We award dan certificates to BGA members who have achieved sufficiently excellent tournament results (description of the system used).

BGA dan grades are awarded for life, so a few of the people on this list are no longer active players or members of the BGA. Conversely, a sufficiently strong player is welcome to enter a British tournament at a dan grade, even if they have not yet been awarded the corresponding certificate. The ratings FAQ explains this further. This list does not show those known to be deceased or living in another country. Some information is incomplete - please let us know if you can provide it.
