05 Nov 2012: British/French Youth Match Eends in a Draw


On the afternoon of Wednesday 31st October, a match took place on KGS between a team of French and a team of British youth players. The French fielded a team of eight. The British team originally consisted of four players, each set to play two games: Henry Clay (1k), Melchior Chui (12k), Peran Truscott (13k) and Oscar Selby (14k).

In the event, Peran's computer and KGS took against each other, meaning that he was not able to join us. Heavy snow also made for a rocky start, delaying...

17 Feb 2013: Youth Grand Prix Results


Congratulations to the top three players in the 2012 Youth Grand Prix, who receive cash prizes thanks to the family of the late John Rickard. First was Edmund Smith, 19k Milton, with 748 points. Second was Adan Mordcovich, 1d Wanstead, with 611 points, and third was Oscar Selby, 14k Epsom, with 590 points. The 2013 Grand Prix is already under way.

The 2013 British Youth Champion is Tian-Ren Chen, retaining the title he won last year. Second was Matei Mandache, a fellow-student at Loughborough School.

The Castledine Trophy was won this year by Loughborough, who beat Aston by 2 games to 1.

The Best Primary School award went to Sandilands, Manchester. They entered five 8- and 9-year-olds, who enjoyed some successes in this their first-ever tournament away from their school.

30 Mar 2013: New junior club


A new junior club is starting on 18th April - Letchworth Junior Chess and Go Club. The club will be a place for youngsters aged 8 - 14 to come and play (or learn) Chess and Go.

19 Jun 2013: 9-year-old Oscar Selby on Channel 4's 'Child Genius' TV series in 2013.


Channel 4 showed 9-year-old Oscar Selby (8.9 kyu, Epsom Go club) on Tuesday 18/6/13, in its series 'Child Genius'. The series of 4 episodes (shown each Tuesday at 9pm) follows a competition among 21 highly-gifted children, aged 7-11, run in association with British Mensa, to find the UK's ultimate child genius.

08 Jul 2013: Youngsters beat adults, to win trophy


Congratulations to youngsters Rebecca Margetts and Oscar Selby, who finished top of the handicap section at this year's British Pair Go Championship, above 14 players (nearly all adults). This meant that they got their hands on the trophies (pairs go-bowls), which just eluded them when they lost in the final in 2012. 19 Sep 2013: UK Go Challenge Report


As the autumn term gets underway and we start thinking of the exciting Go events in 2014, including the European Youth Go Championships coming to England, let's remind ourselves about one of the exciting events earlier this year.

23 youngsters competed in the 2013 finals of the UK Go Challenge, held at Milton C of E Primary School near Cambridge. It was especially good to see two brothers from Bungay at their first event.

The website for these events, (http://eygc2014.org), with much information about them has been active for several months, and is now taking live bookings for accommodation at Butlins.

02 Jan 2014: Oscar Selby wins 2013 Youth Grand Prix


Congratulations to Oscar Selby, 7 kyu from Epsom, for winning the 2013 Youth Grand Prix with an outstanding 1411 points - more than twice the number of his next challenger!

Second came Edmund Smith, 15 kyu from Milton (Cambridge), with 702 points and third was Melchior Chui, 12 kyu from Cambridge, with 499 points.
