BGA Newsletter 293 August 2022

FROM THE EDITOR

Contributions are always welcome, both from our members and others. We ask that they be Go-related and "newsy". The place for debate and general discussion is the BGA open mailing list Gotalk. However, an introduction to a new topic is fine in the Newsletter. A brief introduction to Gotalk, with a link for joining, is on the BGA page Go on the Internet.

Instructions for Contributors: Please use plain text not file-attachments. Keep it fairly brief, and give web-links and contact details. It's good to include pictures. If they are on the internet, send me the URL, otherwise attach the picture files to your email. Send your contribution to newsletter@britgo.org to arrive by the first day of the month.

British Championship Title Match, Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st August

Games 1 and 2 in the best of 3 title match will be at the London Go Centre, starting at 12:00 each day. The two contenders are Gaoge Wang and Bruno Poltronieri. Thanks to the efforts of the LGC the match will be streamed live on the London Go Centre YouTube Channel, and we are pleased to have a commentary by Matthew Macfadyen. The streaming will allow you to ask questions and discuss the match whilst it is in progress.

We plan to publish full analyses of the games a little while after the event, both in the BGJ and on the BGA YouTube Channel.

Volunteers wanted. Please could anyone who is willing and able to act as Referee for one or more of the days contact Tournaments-chair@britgo.org to discuss the possibility.

Go to Feature in New Movie

Austrian director Jessica Hausner is featuring two Go scenes in her new movie "Club Zero". The scenes will be filmed this month in St Catherine's College Oxford. One features a young actor called Sam Anderson playing through a game on his computer and the other him taking part in a tournament and winning a game without much effort, being a brilliant mathematician. Two of the extras in the tournament scene will be actual Go players, with Jonah Burnstone-Cresswell and Connie Amer getting to take part. Toby Manning and Tony Atkins have been advising the producers on the Go content.

Young Players Do Well at European Go Congress

Two of our young players were amongst the ten or so Brits at the European Go Congress in Vatra Dornei in northern Romania. Edmund Smith (3k) scored 7/9 in the Main, 3/5 in the Weekend and 5/8 in the Rapid. Scott Cobbold (2d) won 6/10 in the Main, 4/5 in the Weekend and 6/8 in the Rapid. Also doing very well was Yaoling Yang (5d Bristol) who was 4th in the Main (behind two Korean 1p and a 7d), 1st in the Weekend and 6th in the Rapid. Congratulations to all three. A former Milton Keynes player, now in Denmark, Qiuchi Li was second in the Weekend and 6th in the Main, and Leshan Feng (5d Liverpool) was 8th in the Rapid, 15th in the Main and 16th in the Weekend.
