Future Go Events in the UK

Last change to calendar on: 2008-04-13.

The BGA Tournament Calendar is maintained as one of the activities of the Tournaments Committee.

This calendar contains all official events in the UK and Ireland, and any other events suitable for inclusion. Events listed on this page without a firm date beside them are provisional. Once a date is given you can assume that the event is definitely going ahead unless otherwise stated. Where a precise date is not given the month may also be unreliable. The information provided on this page is correct to the best of our knowledge, however the BGA does not accept liability for any errors or alterations.

Note that events are played under AGA rules unless otherwise specified.

For events in Europe, America and World Wide see the Overseas Tournament Calendar.

There is another page giving the results of British Go tournaments.

There is a section explaining the significance of Pair Go.

Key to the symbols

BC One of the events that comprise the British Go Championship.

BOOKS The BGA book-seller will be in attendance.

BK A limited selection of items from the BGA book-seller will be available.

SHOP Go books/equipment will be available at the tournament from a source other than the BGA book-seller.

A B C Results from these tournaments will be sent to the European Rating List. The different categories are given slightly different weights in the ratings as explained here.

MOB Tournament will have the BGA mobile phone.

Some events are described as “by invitation only”. This is not meant to be unfriendly or clannish but is to do with the nature of these events. For example the events in the British Go Championship require some form of qualification. All players who meet the qualification criteria in a particular year should automatically be invited by the Championships’ Organiser. Events like the international teams matches at the Nippon Club require entries by teams rather than individuals, normally within certain range of grade. So most go clubs within easy reach of London are invited to raise a team if possible.

The BGA mobile phone

The BGA has a mobile phone for people to contact tournament organisers (for example if their car breaks down on the way there.) From July 2007 the number of this phone is 07506 555366. Please remember that organising a tournament is a lot of work and quite stressful. Please do not bother the organiser with trivialities. Also note that not all tournaments make use of this phone (check for the symbol).

Notes for tournament organisers

If you have any information about a forthcoming British Go Tournament that is not listed above then please inform the BGA tournament coordinator who maintains this page. He will also pass the information on to the newsletter.

You are encouraged to read our advice about publicising tournaments, which explains how to get your tournament mentioned in the BGA newsletter, and how you can get a web site made for your tournament. It also tells you what you need to do with the results afterwards. You may also want to to check the Tournament Organisers’ FAQ.

The BGA feel that it is important to provide recognition to people who sponsor Go tournaments. If your tournament is receiving sponsorship then please inform us so that it can be mentioned on this page.

If you want to see what events have been hosted previously see the archived calendars for: 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002-2000.

Hosting a national event

Some of the events on this list, for example the British Go Congress, the UK 13×13 championship and the British Youth Go Championships are the responsibility of the BGA council. In any particular year they arrange for a particular club or person to host each of these events. If you are interested in running one of these events then you are encouraged to approach a member of the council. The BGA would like these events, in particular the British Go Congress which includes the AGM, to visit as many different parts of the country as possible.
