NEWS

10th Annual World Collegiate Weiqi Championship 2026 took place from 7 to 13 July at Fudan University in Shanghai, China. Former top junior player Edmund Smith (1d Warwick University) represented the UK and was one of 14 European students in attendance. He won 3/7 and was 37th out of 48 in the "Men's Winners" Division (1 - 5 dan).

The Youth Grand Prix is where all junior players in open British tournaments score points for playing (40 per event) and points for winning games (up to 60). Leading the table after Manchester were the brothers from Leeds, Caleb Fai (4k) and Joshua Fai (2k), each with 836 points. Clinton Yu , who attends nearly as many events as the brothers, was third with 546; Clinton is also ahead in the Double Digit Kyu Grand Prix. The season runs to after the London Open.

TOURNAMENT RESULTS

Cambridge St Mary's Youth Tournament was on the evening of Wednesday 24 June with 30 players. Overall winner was April Chen. Strongest player was Andrew Volovich. Alethea Peck and Boning Wang won the 13x13 prize, Isla the 9x9 and Marcus was best newcomer.

UK Go Challenge Heats Three local heats were held in Cambridge. At St Pauls there were 8 players; Aiden beat Wakana in the final. At the Stephen Perse Foundation there were 9 players; Samarth and Ethan were the winners. At the Cambridge Junior Chess & Go Club, Maxwell beat Brian in the final.

FORTHCOMING YOUTH TOURNAMENTS

UK Go Challenge Finals Saturday 26 September from 13:00 to 17:00 at Milton Community Centre, Cambridge, CB24 6BL. A children's Go tournament open to all regardless of whether you have played a Challenge heat or not. Games will be played on 13x13 boards. Prizes in age-groups and overall champion. Sponsored by the Youth Go Trust and St. Faith's Cambridge. £5 entry (cash on the day). Send entries to cambridgeyouthgo@gmail.com Poster

British Youth Go Championships Saturday 7 November from 10:00–17:00 at Lady Bay Church Hall, Pierrepoint Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham NG2 5BP. Titles in six age groups and other prizes. Non-British residents also welcome, but some may not be eligible for titles. Beginners and those new to the game will be made particularly welcome, and can select to play most of their games on 13x13 boards. Event is worth double points in the Youth Grand Prix. Other Tournaments The above tournaments are only for those under 18; you are, however, welcome to enter any Go tournament listed on the BGA Tournament Calendar.

European Youth Go Championships is being planned for March 2027 in Serbia. Entry restricted to those under 20 with European nationality. The 2028 event is scheduled for Czechia.

TEACHING/TRAINING

The next "Double-digit kyu" teaching will not now be until a Sunday in September, at 14:30. If you are 10 kyu or weaker and wish to attend, please email youth-chair@britgo.org before the day.
