MSO 9x9

MSO GP Go 9x9 - Sunday 12 March 2023

Players must have registered for the MSO Grand Prix and must have entered the tournament .

Games will be played on OGS online-go.com.

You must play using the OGS account that you specified when entering the tournament. You should make sure that this account has a validated email address in OGS, otherwise you may not be able to use all the OGS chat facilities.

Go to the Mind Sports Olympiad group online-go.com/group/6438 and join the group (if you are not already a member) so your id appears in the list on the right (there will be several pages of ids on the list). We will use the chat box on this group page to communicate during the tournament.

This is not an "OGS Tournament" so ignore the Join a Tournament at the top.

Between 13:15 and 13:45 UK time (GMT), say "hello" in chat so that we know you are present and you may be asked to give your name so we know who you are. If you don't say "hello" by 13:45 then you may be left out of the first round draw. We hope to start the first round at 14:00 WE expect to finish between 16:30 and 17:00 but it depends how good people are at starting their games on time and reporting the results quickly!

The tournament will be 8 rounds Swiss - players are expected to play all 8 rounds. If you cannot play later rounds please say so when your game finishes and you will be removed from the rest of the tournament. Games should be started within 2 minutes of the pairing being announced. Absent players will lose. If a player drops out during a game, they must restart within 2 minutes else they may lose.

We may modify the draw manually to avoid very big mismatches in the earlier rounds.

Pairings will be announced as being on a britgo.org page in the group chat at the start time (hopefully). The player's id can be looked up in the list at the top of the draw page.

The player taking Black should challenge their opponent on OGS. If you are not able to challenge, message your opponent asking them to do it instead.

Now, in the list of players on the right, find your opponent (if present the dot should be green) and click on them (you might need to look through several pages of players to find them). You can also click on their name in chat or use the user search (top left).

Clicking on the player will give a pop-up box, from which you can select the ‘Challenge’ button.

In the pop-up box select:

Game Name - (not needed - but can be "MSO 9x9 R1" and so on)
Private - (leave unticked)

Rules - AGA
Game Speed - Blitz
Time Control - Fischer
Total Time - 3 minutes
Increment - 3 seconds
Max Time - 3 minutes

Ranked - (leave unticked)
Board Size - 9x9
Handicap - None
Komi - Automatic (default is 5.5)
Your Color - Black
Disable Analysis - Tick

We don't expect to have any handicap games but if we do (if there are one or two players much weaker than everyone else) then the komi in those games will be 0.5

The person receiving the challenge will receive a voice notification (if sound is on) and in the top-right corner a challenge notification (bell icon to the left of your name). They should click on this - check the conditions are correct and click the tick to accept. Challenges are also shown on the home page but please try to play the game within the group.

Please play fairly. There should be no use of external aids such as AI software, joseki dictionaries, another player or anything else of the like. We are trusting people to play fairly! The "pause game" function should not be used apart from exceptional circumstances (such as disconnection).

The MSO has rules and tie-breaks.

Please note it is Chinese-style area scoring, so no pass stones are given, but you should play all the dame before passing. Suicide is not allowed. Ko is repeated board position.

These games are played with a short time limit so please don't request "Undo".

At the end of the dame filling, both players pass, then check and accept the dead stones and get the result. Komi is 5.5.

Please announce if you won the game in the group chat, in case it is missed.

Any disputes or problems let us know in chat.
Paul Smith (Paul Smith on OGS) and Matt Marsh (marshmn on OGS)
